Categories
See the category tree behind your store and set the picture shown on each category tile.
What it does
Categories shows the category tree behind your store, and lets you set the image on any category.
When to use it
Use it to check that your categories sit under the right parent, to see how many products each one holds, and to give a category a picture from your Gallery.
The category names, descriptions, order and structure are not edited here - they come from your category file. To change those, use a category import.
Steps
Browse the tree
- Open eCommerce → Categories.
- Select the arrow beside a category to show or hide its subcategories, or use Expand all and Collapse all.
- Select a category name to open it.
Change a category image
- Open eCommerce → Categories and select the category.
- Under Category image, select Change image - or Select image if the category has no picture yet.
- In Select media, choose a picture from the library, or select Upload media to add a new one first - see Gallery.
- Check the preview tile, then select Save image. Select Cancel to drop the change.
To take a picture off a category, select Remove, then Save image.
A category import can replace or clear the image you set here. See category imports for how to keep images managed in the admin panel.
What you'll see
The tree lists your active categories, with subcategories indented under their parent. This list is sorted by the category order, then by name, so it is not always the order customers see - categories left without an order appear first here but last in your store. Set the order in your category import. Each row shows the picture, the name, the number of subcategories and the number of products. Categories with no name read Untitled category.
Some rows carry a badge:
- Orphaned - the category names a parent that is not in your store, so it appears at the top level instead of under that parent, or the category is caught in a parent loop (it names itself as its parent, or two categories name each other).
- Restricted - the category carries a restricted type from your category file. It does not change what customers can see today; the value is listed under Restricted types on the category, and can show as "—" there if the value is blank. See category imports.
- PROMOTION, BADGE_ONE or PREVIOUSLY_PURCHASED - the category opens a ready-made list rather than its own products. See category types.
Opening a category shows Back to categories, a reminder that category imports can overwrite the image, and three cards:
- Category - the image tile with Change image (or Select image) and Remove; once you pick a different picture the buttons change to Save image and Cancel with Unsaved change beside them, and after saving you see Saved - allow 10-20 minutes to appear in your store. The card also shows the category description, or No description set.
- Subcategories - the categories directly beneath this one with their product counts, or No subcategories.
- Details - Action type, Action params, Order, Restricted types, Products and Taxonomy ID, the identifier you use for this category in your import file.
Product counts only include products customers can buy. PROMOTION categories show the number of promoted products in your whole store and BADGE_ONE categories the number carrying the second promotion badge, not products linked to that category. PREVIOUSLY_PURCHASED categories are different for each customer, so they show no count.
The picture is shown as the category tile and banner, so use landscape 4:3 images, ideally 1200x900; other sizes are cropped to fit. A category with no picture shows your Default Category Image from Store Settings, or a placeholder if you have not set one. See category imports for the full image guidance.
If something goes wrong
- Choose an HTTPS image from the media library.: pick the picture again with Change image.
- We couldn't save the category image. Please try again.: nothing was saved. Try again in a moment.
- This category is no longer active. Refresh the page and try again.: the category was removed by an import while you had the page open.
- We couldn't find this category. Refresh the page and try again.: reload the category list and open the category again.
- You are not allowed to update this category.: your account cannot change this company. See Users.
- No media found.: your library is empty - upload a picture first, see Gallery.
- We couldn't load media right now. Please try again.: close the dialog and open it again.
- We couldn't add this file to the media library. Please try again.: the upload did not finish. Try the file again in a moment.
- A picture is greyed out in Select media, or will not upload: images must be 8-bit, RGB or RGBA and within the format and size limits shown at the top of the dialog. Re-export the image and upload it again.
- No categories found. or No eCommerce store linked to this company. or This company is not linked to a B2B store.: your store has no categories yet, or is not connected. Upload a category import, or contact your onboarding manager.
- An image disappeared after an import: your category file also supplied images. Set the image again and see category imports for how to keep images managed here.
- A category is missing from the tree: only active categories are listed. Include it in your complete category file and upload again.
- An Orphaned badge appears: the parent category is missing from your store, or the categories point at each other in a loop. Add the parent to your category file, clear the parent on that row, or break the loop so each category has a single parent above it.
- Opening a category shows a page not found: the category was removed or deactivated by a later import. Select Back to categories or reopen eCommerce → Categories and pick the category from the tree.
